Bodywork
Bodywork in
Traditional Chinese Medicine encompasses a
variety of treatment modalities, such as tui
na, gua sha, cupping, and moxibustion.
These modalities are based on the same TCM
theories used for acupuncture.
They are
excellent for strengthening the body's
resistance, improving circulation, and
eliminating pathogens. All can be used
individually for effective treatment of in
conjunction work with other modalities to
improve the health of the patient.
Tui Na is a type of acupressure and massage,
which involves using the energy meridians of the
body to promote healing. In addition to relaxing
musculature and releasing toxins trapped in the
body, Tui Na also stimulates various acupuncture
points, which enhances the health of the
patient.
Gua sha is a healing technique involving
palpation and cutaneous stimulation where the
skin is pressured, in strokes, by a round-edged
instrument that results in the appearance of
small red petechiae called “sha” that will fade
in 2 to 3 days. Raising “sha” removes blood
stagnation considered pathogenic, promoting
normal circulation and metabolic processes. In
addition to resolving musculoskeletal pain, Gua
sha is used to treat as well as prevent common
colds, flu, bronchitis, asthma, as well as any
chronic disorder involving pain or stagnation.
Cupping is a treatment modality in which
glass cups are placed over the skin to encourage
blood and lymph flow, drain excess fluids and
toxins, loosen adhesions, and stimulate the
peripheral nervous system. Its uses include
relieving pain in the muscles, especially from
stiffness or injury, releasing stress, and
clearing congestion in the chest, which can
occur with colds and flu.
Moxibustion is the
application of heat to acupuncture points. Moxa,
which is made from dried leaves of the herb
mugwort, is burned and used to warm the
patient’s skin. This creates an increase in the
flow of blood and energy, removes blockages,
and, because of the tonifying properties of the
herb, actually strengthens the body. Moxibustion
is used for the treatment of a wide range of
disorders, especially neurological and
musculoskeletal ones. It is also used regularly
for the prevention of illness and the
maintenance of health and well being.
